One of the most thrilling winter sports is ice climbing in India. The majestic Himalayas are the ideal place for ice climbing adventure. The hard core pure white snow waits to be ravished. So why wait when the adventure is just waiting for you.

There is not much of difference in the techniques that are required for rock climbing and ice climbing in India. Ice is also as hard and rough as any surface of a rock and numerous methods of rock climbing can be utilized to challenge any ice barrier.

While taking up ice climbing venture, the adventure seeker can utilize only their 3 limbs as one hand is always occupied by the ice axe. The holds are also not very strong and firm as on rocks. However, holds and anchors are not accessible in ice, which have to be made by the climber themselves with pistons or screws.

Venture into the steep, frozen world of India, but firstly you should be fit for efficient movement on steep ice, placing and removing ice screws, and techniques for climbing multi-pitch routes. The most famous destinations for ice climbing in India are Himalayas, Stok, Suru and Zanskar, Nun Kun Massif and Pir Panjal.

Himalayas
The most thrilling ice climbing in India adventure takes place in this region. The most challenging Himalayan peaks that climbers crave to climb are Nanda Devi and Kanchenjunga. For the biggest mountaineering challenges in India, a climber can opt the Garhwal Himalayas, the Zanskar range in Jammu & Kashmir, Kullu & Lahaul in Himachal Pradesh and the eastern Himalayan range of Sikkim & Darjeeling.

Stok
Across the Indus River to the south of Leh, beyond the village of Stok, there is a range of mountains that is popular with climbers. Ice climbing in India cannot be complete without venturing these peaks.

Suru and Zanskar
The Suru and Zanskar valleys provide some of the more spectacular and difficult climbing in Ladakh. The approach to the twin peaks is from the Kargil-Padum Road. The hard snow covered peaks are an ideal place for ice climbing in India.

Nun Kun Massif
In this region, along the Great Himalayas to the south of the valley and the Zanskar range to the north, there are many peaks between 5,500 and 6,500m, and enthusiastic climbers could even claim some of these higher peaks for their own although all claims must be registered with the Indian Mountaineering Foundation.

Pir Panjal
Pir Panjal mountaineering range is situated south of the Himalayas. The vale of Kashmir is sandwiched between the Pir Panjal and the Himalayas. Ice climbing in India is made much more thrilling with these peaks.
